About the Workshop
Carbon ink is one of the oldest and most widely used writing and drawing materials in the world, with a history spanning cultures, geographies, and centuries. From manuscripts and calligraphy to drawing and printing, its durability and clarity have made it foundational to visual and written traditions.

This workshop introduces participants to the origins, composition, and properties of carbon ink, situating the practice within its historical and material context before moving into hands-on making.

The Learning Experience
The session begins with a guided introduction and live demonstration of the carbon ink–making process, explaining the role and behavior of each ingredient. Participants will then prepare their own ink using traditional methods, working at a measured pace that allows for observation, questions, and experimentation.

Emphasis is placed on understanding material behavior, proportions, and technique, rather than speed or perfection. No prior experience is required.

What You Will Make and Take Home
Each participant will produce a small batch of carbon ink during the workshop. Time permitting, participants may also test their ink on paper to explore its flow, density, and tonal range.

Ingredients
  • Lampblack.
  • Gum Arabic.
