About the Workshop

Iron-gall ink is one of the most historically significant writing inks, widely used in manuscripts, legal documents, and correspondence across Europe and the wider Western world. Valued for its rich tone and permanence, it has played a central role in shaping the written record for centuries.

This workshop introduces participants to the origins, composition, and properties of iron-gall ink, placing the practice within its historical, chemical, and material context before moving into hands-on making.

The Learning Experience

The session begins with a guided introduction and live demonstration of the iron-gall ink–making process, explaining the role and interaction of gallnuts and green vitriol. Participants will then prepare their own ink using traditional methods, working at a measured pace that allows for observation, questions, and experimentation.

Emphasis is placed on understanding material behavior, oxidation, proportions, and technique rather than speed or perfection. No prior experience is required.

What You Will Make and Take Home

Each participant will produce a small batch of iron-gall ink during the workshop. Time permitting, participants may also test their ink on paper to observe its color development, flow, and tonal variation over time.
