About the Workshop

Japanese bookbinding is a traditional hand-binding method known for its structural clarity, visible stitching, and adaptability. Historically used for manuscripts, albums, and artists’ books, the technique allows for a wide range of formats while remaining accessible and durable.

This workshop introduces participants to the principles and structure of Japanese bookbinding, situating the practice within its historical and material context before moving into hands-on making.

The Learning Experience

The session begins with an introduction to Japanese bookbinding tools, materials, and basic binding structures, followed by a guided, step-by-step demonstration. Participants will then create their own hand-bound book from scratch, working at a measured pace that allows for careful assembly, alignment, and stitching.

Emphasis is placed on understanding structure, sequencing, and technique rather than speed or complexity. No prior bookbinding experience is required.

What You Will Make and Take Home

Each participant will complete a hand-bound Japanese-style book during the workshop. The finished book is designed for practical use and experimentation, and participants will take their completed work home at the end of the session.
