Medium: Mixed media on canvas and wood - Framed Size: 88.5 x 64 x 4.5 cm Weight: 3.0 kg Date: 2017-2021 “The past is a torch that illuminates the path to the future” (گذشته چراغ راه آینده است) This well-known Persian saying emphasises on the role of history and heritage in paving the way to building future. The arched structure in the foreground of this painting represents the past, solid and well-defined, while the bright opening that occupies two third of the visual surface, is representative of the way ahead – full of light, yet ambiguous and abstract, with a waving unrecognizable flag that speaks of a new identity to be formed. The torches symbolize knowledge of the past, while the medallion at the top of the arch is a statement of an established cultural heritage – an identity that we are associated with.
